WE THOUGHT KOALA COLONY PERISHED IN BUSHFIRE
Koalas are listed as an endangered species on Australia’s east coast. Surely the survival of this international icon is worthy of a global effort.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2023: Until just days ago we thought all the koalas living on the Fig Tree Reserve before the devastating Black Summer Bushfires of 2019/20 perished.
THE FIG TREE RESERVE IS ONE OF 4 PROJECTS…
SAVE OUR WOODLANDS, INC. was established to pay landholders, in perpetuity, to conserve, enhance and re-establish native woodlands on their land, and for those woodlands to be managed in the best possible way and preserved for generations to come.
Only 15% of the woodlands in NSW remain, the rest have been bulldozed.
THANKS to YOUR donations and support of our $10 per month program, we have secured FOUR significant sections of land, including one we refer to as the Fig Tree Reserve.
Fig tree reserve is 43 hectares of north facing mountain side woodland with spectacular views out to the Nandewar Range in the west.
The Fig Tree Reserve burned in the Black Summer Bushfires of 2019/2020. Almost all the mature trees on the Fig Tree Reserve were lost.
Nationwide, the Black Summer Bushfires killed 3 billion animals and trillions of invertebrates.
We’ve worked hard to rid the Reserve of invasive species and do everything in our power to help the ecosystems bounce back – along with creating and maintaining access routes to help prevent, manage – and if necessary fight future fires.
You can imagine our delight when one of our experts while doing a routine check of the land, discovered that the Fig Tree Reserve is once again home to a small koala population.
A population that with your help will grow and be protected for future generations.

Whether koalas survived the fire on Fig Tree Reserve – or others moved in – the fact that there are koalas in the Reserve is only possible because of the generosity of people like you.

We have NOT yet FULLY funded the Fig Tree Reserve and our most recent discovery of koalas on the Reserve makes your continued financial support all the more important. It’s imperative that we fully fund this project – and as soon as possible.
Save Our Woodlands is an environmentally conscious group of volunteers dedicated to preserving threatened birds, animals and ecosystems in the woodlands of New South Wales, Australia.
Only 15% of our woodlands remain, the rest has been cleared for agriculture.
