At Save Our Woodlands we often focus on how many species native to Australia are on the verge of extinction – or even worse how many have already disappeared.
When one of Australia’s greatest icons, the koala has been added to the endangered list – isn’t it time to sit up and take notice?
With your help, we are determined to protect the remaining 15% of the woodlands of NSW for so many reasons.
We often focus on how deforestation leads to the spread of invasive weeds which negatively impact the precious habits required by wildlife native to Australia.
But did you know that…
When forests are cut, the salinity of the soil can greatly increases?
As a result, saline water draining from such areas can affect downstream or downslope water quality.
As we’ve stated numerous times, 85% of the woodlands in NSW have been destroyed. Our goal is to protect the remaining 15% and to restore at least some of that 85%.
It is estimated that around 7% of the agricultural area of western Australia is suffering from this problem following deforestation – we suspect that percentage is as great or greater in NSW.
Moreover, studies in Australia’s wet tropics show that soils have limited capacity to recover from deforestation. This adds to deforestation’s price tag. Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) estimates that land degradation costs about $1 billion annually.
A hefty price tag that hits every Australian, tax-paying citizen hard in the pocketbook.

Our inability to adequately manage pressures will continue to result in species extinctions and deteriorating ecosystem condition, which are reducing the environmental capital on which current and future economies depend. Social, environmental and economic impacts are already apparent.

Save Our Woodlands is an environmentally conscious group of volunteers dedicated to preserving threatened birds, animals and ecosystems in the woodlands of New South Wales, Australia.
Only 15% of our woodlands remain, the rest has been cleared for agriculture.
Save Our Woodlands Inc. secures and protects woodlands in NSW and pays landholders, in perpetuity, to conserve, enhance and re-establish native woodlands on THEIR land, and to manage these woodlands, so they are maintained.
