RING-TAILED POSSUMS

During our Spring woodland festival, we cannot forget the ring-tailed possums which are quite common and can raise one or two young every season.

They are about the size of a cat, and live exclusively in trees where they make a nest or drey to sleep in during the day. Several possums may share the same nest.

Baby ringtails are born as tiny naked foetuses and will spend time in the mother’s pouch until they are old enough to travel on her back. Unlike other possums, male ring-tailed possums will spend time taking care of their young.

Ring-tailed possums have adapted to urban living and can be found in most towns and cities.

Their main predator is cats, but in the woodlands, they are also prey to foxes.

People tend to think that woodlands are “just bush,” consequently, over 85% of the native woodlands in New South Wales, Australia have been replaced by agriculture.
