Our last few posts have been “dingo-themed”.
That theme continues today.
The National Film and Television School (NFTS) is about to release a documentary featuring “The Dingo Fence”.
For 150 years, Australia has been cut in two by a fence first erected to contain rabbits, then adapted to protect livestock from dingoes. But some now claim that dingoes are misunderstood and that the fence is an expensive waste of time. Has the time finally come to tear down the longest fence in the world?
Our last few posts have not only been “dingo-themed” they’ve focused on trophic cascades.
And although we have yet to be able to watch the whole documentary we expect that it will follow along with a similar trophic cascade theme.
Trophic cascades are powerful indirect interactions that can control entire ecosystems. Trophic cascades occur when predators limit the density and/or behavior of their prey and thereby enhance survival of the next lower trophic level.

When a 5,500-kilometre dingo fence was constructed between Queensland and Western Australia in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the idea was to stop dingoes from killing livestock in the pastureland to the south.
But by excluding an apex predator, scientists believe we may have triggered a “trophic cascade” that has changed the physical shape of the landscape.
We need your help to continue to protect precious habitats in New South Wales.
Save Our Woodlands has secured 4 significant tracks of land but funding is still needed for each.
Additionally, we are raising funds to build 4 km of wildlife-friendly fencing to keep stock out of precious and protected in perpetuity habitats of endangered and at risk species.

Save Our Woodlands is an environmentally conscious group of volunteers dedicated to preserving threatened birds, animals and ecosystems in the woodlands of New South Wales, Australia.
Only 15% of our woodlands remain, the rest has been cleared for agriculture.
Save Our Woodlands Inc. secures and protects woodlands in NSW and pays landholders, in perpetuity, to conserve, enhance and re-establish native woodlands on THEIR land, and to manage these woodlands, so they are maintained.
